Prescription naproxen is used to relieve pain, tenderness, swelling, and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis (arthritis caused by a breakdown of the lining of the joints), rheumatoid arthritis (arthritis caused by swelling of the lining of the joints), juvenile arthritis (a form of joint disease in children), and ankylosing spondylitis (arthritis that mainly affects the spine). Prescription naproxen tablets, extended-release tablets, and suspension are also used to relieve shoulder pain caused by bursitis (inflammation of a fluid-filled sac in the shoulder joint), tendinitis (inflammation of the tissue that connects muscle to bone), gouty arthritis (attacks of joint pain caused by a build-up of certain substances in the joints), and pain from other causes, including menstrual pain (pain that happens before or during a menstrual period). Nonprescription naproxen is used to reduce fever and to relieve mild pain from headaches, muscle aches, arthritis, menstrual periods, the common cold, toothaches, and backaches. Naproxen is in a class of medications called NSAIDs. It works by stopping the body's production of a substance that causes pain, fever, and inflammation.Prescription naproxen comes as a regular tablet, an enteric coated tablet (delayed-release tablet), an extended-release (long-acting) tablet, and a suspension (liquid) to take by mouth. The extended-release tablets are usually taken once a day. The tablets, enteric coated tablets, and suspension are usually taken twice a day for arthritis. The tablets and suspension are usually taken every 8 hours for gout, and every 6-8 hours as needed for pain. If you are taking naproxen on a regular basis, you should take it at the same time(s) every day. .Nonprescription naproxen comes as tablet and a gelatin coated tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken with a full glass of water every 8-12 hours as needed. Nonprescription naproxen may be taken with food or milk to prevent stomach upset.Follow the directions on the package or prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take naproxen exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor or written on the package.Shake the liquid well before each use to mix the medication evenly. Use the measuring cup provided to measure each dose of the liquid.Swallow the enteric coated tablets and extended release tablets whole; do not split, chew, or crush them.If you are taking naproxen to relieve the symptoms of arthritis, your symptoms may begin to improve within 1 week. It may take 2 weeks or longer for you to feel the full benefit of the medication.Stop taking nonprescription naproxen and call your doctor if your symptoms get worse, you develop new or unexpected symptoms, the part of your body that was painful becomes red or swollen, your pain lasts for more than 10 days, or your fever lasts for more than 3 days.Naproxen is also sometimes used to treat Paget's disease of bone (a condition in which the bones become abnormally thick, fragile, and misshapen) and Bartter's syndrome (a condition in which the body does not absorb enough potassium, causing muscle cramping and weakness and other symptoms). Talk to your doctor about the risks of using this medication for your condition.

Meloset ( Mel, Mlt, Generic Melatonin )

Melatonin is a hormone made by a part of the brain called the pineal (say: "pin-ee-all") gland. Melatonin may help our bodies know when it's time to go to sleep and when it's time to wake up. Melatonin supplements (in pill form) can also be taken. There are two types of melatonin that may be used in these pills: natural and synthetic (man-made). Natural melatonin is made from the pineal gland of animals. This form could be contaminated with a virus and is therefore not recommended. The synthetic form of melatonin does not carry this risk. If you are not sure if your melatonin is natural or synthetic, ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking it.Melatonin can be used to treat insomnia (difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep). It can also be taken to prevent jet lag. Beyond that, there is little scientific evidence that melatonin has a role in promoting health or treating disease.

Cerazette ( Generic Desogestrel )

Cerazette tablets are a type of hormonal contraceptive commonly known as the 'mini pill' or progestogen-only pill (POP). They contain the active ingredient desogestrel, which is a synthetic progestogen, similar to the natural progestogens produced by the body.Desogestrel works as a contraceptive primarily by preventing the release of an egg from the ovary (ovulation). It also acts by increasing the thickness of the natural mucus at the neck of the womb, making it more difficult for sperm to cross from the vagina into the womb. By preventing sperm entering the womb, successful fertilisation of any eggs that are released is less likely. Desogestrel also acts to change the quality of the womb lining (endometrium). This prevents the successful implantation of any fertilised eggs onto the wall of the womb, thereby preventing pregnancy. Cerazette tablets should be taken every day on a continuous basis, ie you take the packs back to back without a break, including when you are having a period. (This is unlike the combined pill, which is usually taken every day for three weeks, followed by a pill-free week.)Ideally, you should start taking this pill on day one of your menstrual cycle (the first day of your period). This will protect you from pregnancy immediately and you won't need to use any additional methods of contraception. If necessary, you can also start taking it up to day five of your cycle without needing to use additional contraception when you start. However, if you have a short menstrual cycle (with your period coming every 23 days or less), starting as late as the fifth day of your cycle may not provide you with immediate contraceptive protection. You should talk to your doctor or nurse about this and whether you need to use an additional contraceptive method for the first two days. You can also start taking this pill at any other time in your cycle if your doctor is reasonably sure that you are not pregnant. If you start taking this pill at any other time in your cycle, you will need to use additional contraception, eg condoms for the first two days of pill taking. If you are starting this pill after giving birth, you are protected against pregnancy immediately and do not need to use extra contraception if you start taking it on day 21 after giving birth. (You can start before day 21, but this increases the risk of breakthrough bleeding and is unnecessary.) If you start taking it later than 21 days after giving birth, you should use extra contraception for the first two days. If you are starting this pill immediately after a miscarriage or abortion at under 24 weeks, you will protected against pregnancy immediately. If you start taking it more than seven days after the miscarriage or abortion, you should use extra contraception for the first two days of pill taking. Cerazette tablets must be taken continuously, at the same time every day, for them to be effective at preventing pregnancy. If you are more than twelve hours late taking your pill, you will not be protected against pregnancy. If this happens, you should use an extra barrier method of contraception, eg condoms, for the next two days, while continuing with your normal pill taking.

Diprolene ( Alphatrex, Betalene, Del-Beta , Diprolene, Diprosone, Maxivate, Generic Betamethasone )

Use betamethasone exactly as directed. Do not use more or less of it or use it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Do not apply it to other areas of your body or wrap or bandage the treated area unless directed to do so by your doctor.Wash or soak the affected area thoroughly before applying the medicine, unless it irritates your skin. Then apply the ointment or cream sparingly in a thin film and rub it in gently. To use the lotion on your scalp, part your hair, apply a small amount of the medicine on the affected area, and rub it in gently. Protect the area from washing and rubbing until the lotion dries. You may wash your hair as usual but not right after applying the medicine. To apply an aerosol, shake well and spray on the affected area holding the container about 3 to 6 inches away. Spray for about 2 seconds to cover an area the size of your hand. Take care not to inhale the vapors. If you are spraying near your face, cover your eyes.Avoid prolonged use on the face, in the genital and rectal areas, and in skin creases and armpits unless directed by your doctor. If you are using betamethasone on your face, keep it out of your eyes.If you are using betamethasone on a child's diaper area, do not use tight-fitting diapers or plastic pants. Such use may increase side effects.Do not apply cosmetics or other skin preparations on the treated area without talking with your doctor. If your doctor tells you to wrap or bandage the treated area, follow these instructions: Soak the area in water or wash it well. While the skin is moist, gently rub the medication into the affected areas. Cover the area with plastic wrap (such as Saran Wrap or Handi-Wrap.) The plastic may be held in place with a gauze or elastic bandage or adhesive tape on the normal skin beside the treated area. (Instead of using plastic wrap, plastic gloves may be used for the hands, plastic bags for the feet, or a shower cap for the scalp.) Carefully seal the edges of the plastic to make sure the wrap adheres closely to the skin. If the affected area is moist, you can leave the edges of the plastic wrap partly unsealed or puncture the wrap to allow excess moisture to escape. Leave the plastic wrapping in place as long as instructed by your doctor. Usually plastic wraps are left in place not more than 12 hours each day. Cleanse the skin and reapply the medication each time a new plastic wrapping is applied.

Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.Do not stop taking fludrocortisone without talking to your doctor. Stopping the drug abruptly can cause loss of appetite, an upset stomach, vomiting, drowsiness, confusion, headache, fever, joint and muscle pain, peeling skin, and weight loss. If you take large doses for a long time, your doctor probably will decrease your dose gradually to allow your body to adjust before stopping the drug completely. Watch for these side effects if you are gradually decreasing your dose and after you stop taking the tablets. If these problems occur, call your doctor immediately. You may need to increase your dose temporarily or start taking the tablets again.Fludrocortisone is also used to increase blood pressure.

Alphadol ( One-Alpha. Alfad, Generic Alfacalcidol )

This belongs to the group of medicines known as vitamins.Alfacalcidol is a form of Vitamin D. Vitamin D is necessary for healthy bones and teeth, and a healthy immune system.Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. It controls the absorption of calcium from the gut and is used to make bones. The body can make vitamin D when the skin is exposed to sunlight. Deficiency is caused by inadequate exposure to sunlight and low consumption of foods containing Vitamin D. The best natural sources are found in oily fish (sardine, herring, salmon and tuna), liver, dairy products and egg yolks.Long-term Vitamin D deficiency may cause low blood levels of calcium and phosphate, which results in the softening of the bones. In children this can cause abnormal bone development (rickets) and in adults it can cause osteoporosis, backache, muscle weakness, bone pain and fractures. Alfacalcidol is used to treat Vitamin D deficiency and conditions where there is not enough calcium in the blood especially in patients who have kidney problems.Alfacalcidol is also sometimes known as hydroxycholecalciferol. You may notice the use of either spelling on your container.Alfacalcidol is available in capsule, oral drops and injection form.It is also sometimes known as: One-Alpha. You may notice the use of any of these names on the packaging of your medicine. How does it work? When Vitamin D is ingested in the form usually present in the diet (or produced in the skin by the action of sunlight) it requires to be "activated" by a series of chemical steps before it has any effect in the body. An important action of Vitamin D is to increase the absorption of calcium in the food we eat and so to maintain calcium stores in the body. One step in the activation of the Vitamin takes place in the kidney and requires the presence of a hormone called parathyroid hormone (PTH). When PTH is lacking in the body (which is the case following parathyroidectomy) the kidney step cannot take place and calcium deficiency (hypocalcaemia) results. To get around this problem it is necessary to by-pass the kidney step by taking the "activated" form of Vitamin D which is Alfacalcidol. Alfacalcidol is therefore used to prevent Vitamin D deficiency and thus hypocalcaemia in people who have undergone the surgical removal of their parathyroid glands (parathyroidectomy). How do I take it?Alfacalcidol can be taken as a capsule or as a liquid for which purpose a measure/dispenser is provided. The individual dose is that required to maintain a normal level of calcium in the blood. It may be adjusted from time to time in response to blood test results. Most adults require to take between 1 microgram and 3 microgram Alfacalcidol daily in order to achieve initial control of their calcium level but the maintenance dose thereafter is normally in the range 0.25 microgram to 1 microgram per day. The dose is taken once a day and at any time of the day.
